Georgia spring/summer 2019
Our travel route:
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia
Trinity Church, a jewel in Kazbegi National Park
A challenging pass in the Kazbegi Mountains
    Truso Valley, big and beautiful
  Trinity Church
The 2 a.m. wake-up call sounded like a non-starter, especially for Ben, our sleepyhead. But so glad we got our act together! Wouldn’t have missed this for the world.
We had to hurry to get there by sunrise. But hey, who needs sleep? Watching the sun rise at Trinity Church was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Perched on a hilltop and set against a spectacular mountainside, the church and its bell tower date back to the 14th century.
the whole setting was magical: wild and yet so peaceful

       The cable-car city

Originally built in 1954 to improve public transport for the local mining industry, the cable-car network still connects the various parts of Chiatura sprawling at the foot of the magnificent Caucasus mountains.

The cables extend across the Kwirila river and up into the residential districts that dot the hillsides, also linking the many mineshafts. It’s like a gigantic spider web!

We explored the system for hours - some lines are free and others cost around 10 euro cents.

             Laguna Vere
Back to nature: that 's what ’s happening here at this huge abandoned complex with its indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

    Opened in 1978.

    Closed in 2014.
Laguna Vere was the first world-class aquatic sports facility in the Caucasus in its heyday. Now the silence is overwhelming. Mind-boggling to imagine a capacity crowd of 5,500 filling this place with life.

Like the eye of the needle: this approach is the only way to access Truso Valley. A mystical place with medieval towers and locals who treat you like family.

All you need for the perfect trip: the right clothes – and the right people.

Travel together
Our trusty four-wheel drive got us there through thick and thin. Shake it, baby! We barrelled down the pass at 50 mph, almost 8,000 feet above the valley floor.
Where there are sheep, there’s a shepherd!
Being on the road means
meeting new people ...

... all the time. Today we ran into Vlaso, a Truso Valley original. He looks 100 years old, but still seems fitter than us. Later he invited us to dinner. What a night!

Great food, great
hospitality, great company. ‘Gaumardschoss!’
                     (Cheers!)

Only a handful of people live in this immense, remote valley. How cool is that? Imagine the solitude.
We want to experience it all.
Get the spirit.
